香港 SIM 卡訪客實名登記 | MollySIM

If you are visiting Hong Kong, a foreign passport is an accepted document for Hong Kong SIM real-name registration. The practical catch is that not every passport or identity document qualifies. Check the exact document you intend to use before choosing a registration channel.

Your card choice also depends on where you will use your data: mainly in Hong Kong, across neighbouring destinations, or only to keep a Hong Kong number for SMS. The registration rules and plan comparison below help you match both the paperwork and the card to your trip.

Why prepaid SIMs require registration

Hong Kong's Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) requires prepaid SIM cards to complete real-name registration. Service cannot be activated before registration is complete. Buying a card and completing its identity registration are separate requirements; payment alone does not satisfy the registration rule.

Existing prepaid cards had to register by 23 Feb 2026. That was the deadline for pre-existing cards, not a future deadline you can use when buying a card for your visit.

MollySIM activates cards for the customer before shipping, but that ordering step does not remove OFCA's registration requirement: registration must precede service activation. Check the registration instructions supplied with your order, or ask MollySIM support what your specific card needs.

For HK prepaid SIM passport registration, use the document's exact name. OFCA's rules and carrier FAQs distinguish the accepted documents below from documents that cannot be used.

DocumentAccepted for registration?What to do
Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID)YesFollow the HKID channel rules below.
PRC passportYesChoose the corresponding passport document type.
Macao SAR passportYesChoose the corresponding passport document type.
Foreign passportYesUse this category if it matches your passport.
HKID application acknowledgementYes, in store onlyTake the original to a carrier store.
RecognizanceYesSelect the matching document type when registering.
HKSAR passportNoUse an accepted document instead.
BN(O) passportNoUse an accepted document instead.
Mainland Travel Permit for HK/Macau residentsNoUse an accepted document instead.
PRC Resident Identity CardNoUse an accepted document instead.

Do not read “foreign passport” as permission to submit a BN(O) passport: it is explicitly on the non-accepted list. Likewise, a PRC passport and a PRC Resident Identity Card are different documents with different registration outcomes. A clearer photograph cannot make an excluded document acceptable.

Limits, HKID rules and younger registrants

Under OFCA's rules, you can register up to 10 prepaid SIM cards per individual, per telecom carrier. The limit is per carrier, so keep track of your existing registrations with the carrier you intend to use.

Since 1 Sep 2026, HKID holders registering online must use iAM Smart. They can alternatively register in a carrier store. If you hold an HKID, follow that requirement when choosing your channel; the visitor passport guidance should not be treated as a way around it.

Registrants under 16 need an accompanying adult aged 18 or above, whose ID is also registered. Prepare the adult's identification alongside the younger registrant's accepted document.

How registration works in practice

Carrier FAQs identify the carrier website or app and carrier retail stores as registration channels. For online registration, prepare a photo of the original accepted document and follow the carrier's instructions. In a store, show the original document.

Start by identifying your accepted document, then choose the channel that fits it. A visitor using a foreign passport should select the matching passport category. If you have a PRC passport or Macao SAR passport, choose the corresponding type instead of submitting a different identity document under that label.

Review your entered details against the original before submitting. For an HKID application acknowledgement, use a store because that document is accepted in store only. If the online form does not offer a suitable category, ask the carrier how to proceed rather than selecting an inaccurate one.

Keep registration completion and service activation distinct when checking progress. A submitted form is not, by itself, evidence that both are complete.

Which MollySIM Hong Kong card fits your trip?

The carrier plan allowances differ most in how data is allocated by destination. These are MollySIM retail prices in USD; the stored value shown for Three is in Hong Kong dollars.

CardPriceData and validityCalls and extras
CSL Hong Kong Mobi$44.0040GB over 365 days: 25GB in Hong Kong, plus 15GB shared across Mainland China, Macau and Taiwan2,000 minutes of Hong Kong airtime; real-name registration required
Three Hong Kong$45.0020GB on 4G/5G across Hong Kong, Mainland China, Macau and Taiwan over 395 days2,000 minutes of Hong Kong airtime; extra HK$20 stored value after activation

Choose CSL Mobi if your itinerary is centred on Hong Kong and its separate regional allowance fits your side trips. Its 40GB total does not mean you can use all that data in Mainland China, Macau or Taiwan: those destinations share the 15GB portion.

Choose Three if your itinerary moves among the listed destinations and its 20GB allowance fits your overall usage. Compare that flexibility with CSL's larger total and destination split. Both cards include Hong Kong airtime; do not assume those minutes are a promise of calls throughout every data destination.

For a shorter visit, use our weekly data planning guide to estimate your needs before deciding which allowance matters more. A long validity period is useful only if the card also suits your destinations and usage.

Every physical card can also be delivered as an eSIM, with the activation QR code sent by email; write eSIM in your order note.

The cheaper option for keeping an HK number

If your purpose is number preservation and SMS, consider the Hong Kong Mobile SIM at $27.49. It keeps a Hong Kong number for global roaming SMS, with maintenance of about HK$15 per year.

Treat the purchase price and approximate maintenance amount as separate costs in different currencies. Choose this card around its stated number and SMS purpose; the data bundles in the comparison above belong to the other products.

Troubleshooting

Registration rejected: Read the carrier's stated reason and compare your submission with your original document. Check the document category and entered details. If the reason remains unclear, ask the carrier for guidance before resubmitting.

Document type not accepted: Return to the document table. An HKSAR passport, BN(O) passport, Mainland Travel Permit for HK/Macau residents or PRC Resident Identity Card cannot be substituted for an accepted document. Ask the carrier for guidance if you have no accepted document available.

Service not activated: First confirm whether registration has completed, because OFCA requires it before activation. For a MollySIM order, contact support to check the card's status against the order's activation arrangements. Do not assume a particular waiting period will resolve the issue.

Expired card: Ask the carrier or MollySIM support to check the card's status and applicable terms. Do not assume that identity registration extends plan validity or restores an expired card. If something is wrong with the card, support reviews it individually; activated cards have no change-of-mind refunds.

FAQ

Can a non-resident register with a foreign passport?

Yes. A foreign passport is on the accepted list. Choose its matching document category and follow the carrier's registration instructions.

Can I use a BN(O) or HKSAR passport?

No. Neither is accepted for this registration. Use another accepted document that you hold.

Is a PRC Resident Identity Card enough?

No. The accepted list includes a PRC passport, but excludes the PRC Resident Identity Card.

How many prepaid SIMs can I register?

OFCA permits up to 10 per individual, per telecom carrier. Count your registrations with the relevant carrier when checking this limit.

Do HKID holders need iAM Smart?

For online registration, yes, since 1 Sep 2026. Registering in a carrier store is the alternative.

Can someone under 16 register?

Yes, with an accompanying adult aged 18 or above whose identification is also registered.

Before you order

Match your itinerary to the data allocation, or choose the number-preservation card for its SMS purpose. Then keep your accepted original document ready and resolve any registration questions with the carrier or MollySIM support before relying on the service for your trip.
